There’s a lot of confusion out there today about social media marketing, a lot of businesses are feeling like they need a whole team of social media marketers to keep up with the Joneses.
There’s no question that many businesses have benefited greatly due to social media, but is it really true that every business needs social media marketing?

University Overview & What you’ll learn inside Hootsuite Academy
- The very basics of all social media types & the fundamentals on how to use them – even if you’ve never been on Facebook before. If you’re mainly Facebook/Instagram person like I am, you’ll get to learn some of the other social media platforms that are out there today
- How to setup engaging profiles
- Introduction to other applications that can help your social media endeavours

- Some training feels repetitive, like rehashing the same idea in a different way
- perhaps over emphasis on the twitter platform, which got the majority of attention in the video training. Smaller focus on Facebook, Pintrest or LinkedIn
- lacking distinction on when to use which social media platform. IMO twitter has different uses than Instagram for example.

Overall the Hootsuite gives you some very solid fundamental strategies with social media.
Sharing a good post with your current audience is good, but creating post that can reach and draw in new audience is even better, but just know that it takes bit more skill to do that than what is offered in this Hootsuite University.

Find a viral image that is related to your niche or audience
Join engagement groups in Facebook – what these groups are basically is people will give you likes in exchange for you doing the same for them.
These groups will help you boost your viral images that you post on your page and when a brand new post gets accelerated likes, it begins to show up in people’s navigator feeds allowing that post to reach more and more people.
When done properly, you’ll be able to grow your fanbase & followers quite rapidly.
My Thoughts on Social Media Marketing Myth, How Important is it?
Social media marketing has its uses particularly if you’re attempting to build your own personal brand.
Social media is a great platform for you to offer absolutely free value to your audience & in return, you’ll have a certain % of your audience that’ll buy real product or service from you because when you give something out for free, people feel inclined to give back.
This is sales 101, law of reciprocity.
The kind of content that does really well on social media is something that is both educational AND entertaining.
But for most businesses that offer a service or product and need a constant flow of new customers social media marketing might be bit overrated.
Unless you’re doing some paid advertising on social media.
Here’s the thing…
People on social media are on there to be social or for the most part to kill some time.
They’re not in a buyer’s mindset.
So conversion rate on social media posts are actually quite low.
Most people are there to consume content for free, and not spend any money.
This is why, ultimately you want to attract customers that’re actually needing your product & service.
This is called Attraction Marketing.
Instead of putting your efforts in a space where people aren’t actually needing you.
Why not put more effort in creating digital properties that can attract your customers to you.
The best way to do this online in 2018 is still search engine optimization (SEO).
Meaning ranking websites that rank for buyer-intent keywords.
Above is an example of a buyer-intent keyword, you better believe anyone that’s searching “plumbers in Detroit, MI” is looking for a plumber ASAP.
When you know how to rank websites for businesses and have it show up for these types of keywords that directly affects their revenue then you have a skill that has much more impact than social media marketing.

& My business routinely helps other businesses double, triple, quadruple in revenue with no use of social media.
Many of my clients will report that they’ve hired social media marketers in the past and it did nothing for them.
So this Myth that everyone needs social media marketing is simply not true.
Ranking a website that attracts people that are already looking for your product/service is much more valuable.
In my opinion, the Hootsuite Academy is very basic training in social media marketing.
There are much more advanced strategies out there in growing your followers, but ultimately I think managing your social media for your business can be pretty basic and you’ll still do fine, if you have other strong marketing practices in play.
Ultimately, I’ve found that social media marketing isn’t really that strong of a tactic to grow your customer base.
Unless you’re using paid advertising on social media which Hootsuite doesn’t cover, or you’re extremely gifted or talented in making video content that can go viral.
Other than that for most businesses, you really should be focused on generating free traffic through one of the most visited placed on the internet which is Google.com and Youtube.com
