Marisa Murgatroyd is a personal branding expert that takes businesses & entrepreneurs and juices up their marketing message by injecting more of that owner’s personal flavors so that their voice stands out from the crowd.
Her latest mentorship program, Personal Brand Power is all about figuring out who you are, what makes you different in a way that matters & resonates with your customers.
I’ve gone through this course & I’ll give you my take on it, my unbiased review.
Her strategy is simple, in 2018 there are billions of websites out there, this is why it is more important now than ever to stand out and build your personal brand because that’s what makes your business stand out and be unique because as human beings we are always looking to connect more deeply with our fellow humans as evident by the fact we’re spending so much time on Facebook.
The problem with not having enough personal branding for your business is that your marketing message start sounding very similar to all of your competitors.
How do you actually stand out in a way that matters? Does Marisa’s course actually work?
10 hours worth of content, Marisa dives deep into how to carefully craft your personal brand in a way that’s authentic to you & allows your audience to connect on a deeper level with you while appearing like the expert that can solve their problems.
I think that’s an important distinction to make. I’ve seen people go too far into the “personal” side of their message & losing focus on what they actually offer to their customers and how they’re the expert that can ultimately solve big problems.
Is personal branding always necessary to make money online? I have to say that it is not because I built my first $10K per month local lead generation business without putting my face on any of it.
But I do have experience building few successful blogs that made money online such as this blog, Jounral Review, and I gotta say in those businesses, your personal branding is vital. And I will say that eventually I did apply personal branding to my lead generation business as well, naming the business after my first name. lppeiLeads.com
With blogs, if you write a review of a product or service, but you sound like 5 other reviews done by other marketers, you’re not giving any reason for your readers to stick around and look deeper into your business.
But if you can stand out.
Be interesting by offering your unique perspective.
You can actually begin building loyal fans that’ll begin following you and love buying what you have to offer.
A good way to understand how all of this can look is to actually visit Marisa’s own website: liveyourmessage.com
The header of her homepage shows her face as well as her unique message that encapsulates what service / solution she offers to people.
She has an about Marisa section pretty close to the top of the page as well, which I took notice. Most people have a About Me section at the bottom of the page or on a completely separate page.
Marisa is establishing who she is right away, as she says people judge your business & who you are within seconds of landing on your website.
What else is on her homepage?
- Her Offer / Call To Action / Something Free & Valuable in exchange for your email, email is collected for email marketing, which further establishes personal brand in an extended time frame
- Her Super Power Quiz, Another way to get educate her visitors as well as get them interactive
- Getting Started Section, Again offering free value on how one can get started with Personal Branding
- Her latest blog posts, lets visitors read up more deeply on who she is
- Testimonial section, gives her third-party confirmation
- Her resume, past client work
Marisa definitely knows what she’s doing, all of these things on her homepage has a purpose to build her personal brand as the leading expert. She’s not going on and on about what her favorite color is or what she likes to do as a hobby.
Personal branding doesn’t mean you begin talking all about yourself. Her message is all geared towards how best she can help you.
The feeling that should come across after viewing your message is “Wow, she/he sure knows their stuff”
When you become that leading expert, you can command higher $$$ for your service but if you can intertwine that with your unique vision then you will have customers begging to do business with you.
Her course can guide you the right way of building this type of personal brand, & potentially save you thousands of dollars in costly mistakes that’s preventing you from landing the type of clients you deserve.
Attraction Marketing & Interruption Marketing
This is a concept I learned 2 years into my local lead generation business and it has made a big difference for me.
For the first 2 years, I was putting in a lot of time & effort into prospecting, which is going out there and actively pursuing potential customers & letting them know what I do & how I can help their business.
Its a churn & burn process.
Most will reject what you have to say.
THis is Interruption Marketing, basically, I have to interrupt someone’s day and make a pitch to them. Its equivalent to that person in the center isle of a shopping mall offering you to try some sample skin cream.
Yes I did land some deals but it becomes a number game of needing to interrupt & pitch as many people as possible & you have to keep that effort going nonstop if you don’t want your pipeline to dry up.
Attraction marketing is putting your message out there in the internet whether that’d be a blog post or youtube videos, having skills to rank those properties or that content, & then having your ideal prospects come find you.
Its so much more fun talking to these types of prospects because they are the ones coming to you.
Who has all the power then?
They’re already prequalified and pre-sold to some degree. Closing them becomes so much easier.
& if you utilize some of Marisa’s tactics of personal branding, & they fall in love with who you are before you get on the phone with them then you could attract prospects that are practically begging to do business with you.
That is ultimately where a lot of the top online entrepreneurs will get to eventually, through putting out tons of great value for free online which builds their credibility & personal branding, and then they capitalize on their personal brand equity because now they were able to position themselves in the industry as the go-to guy or gal.
Just take a look at people like
- Tony Robbins
- Gary Vaynerchuk
- Grant Cardone
- Tai Lopez
they all have massive number of subscribers, followers & fan base because they took the time to build their personal branding by bringing massive amounts of content to the marketplace that stood out & was uniquely them.
Attention is the #1 Currency
I heard Grant Cardone say this once “you need haters, if you can get half the country to hate you, you can become president”
The point was, your number 1 focus if you wanna get rich is to ask yourself “how can I get more attention”
Gary Vaynerchuk also says all the time that “attention is the #1 currency”
Grant’s not saying, purposely go find haters, he’s saying be original & be unique. Be so authentically you that you’re polarizing, meaning not everyone’s gonna like you but those that do will find you refreshingly original & therefore able to resonate on a much deeper level with you. They will love to buy from you and buy a lot from you.
Grant admits to himself that his uniqueness is not for everybody. He can be extremely blunt, he can sound aggressive, abrasive, he curses during his presentation, talks about touchy subjects like making money a lot, but this allows him to stand out, get the topline attention of his audience that turns into $$$ in his bank account.
& he’ll also have more fun doing it because he’s able to be edgy and be more of himself.
Grant says that’s the big part of why he became an entrepreneur, so he can be himself. Say the F word whenever he wants without thinking twice about it.
This is why I also build loyal readership on my blogs, because I know how to write in my unique voice and not afraid to throw in some curse words here & there, to really bring home a point or simply write naturally like I’m talking to a friend.
What’s the best type of content?
Be entertaining & informative.
We all have such diversely different lives, everyone has their own unique insight or perspective on things. Its this uniqueness that other people are craving for on the internet when so much of your competition can be so cookie cutter.
Marisa can take you by the hand and how to best uncover that uniqueness about you and how to properly present it to your audience.
From my experience of building multiple businesses online, my most successful one being my $50K per month local lead generation business which we are coaching other people now how to do the same here.
Didn’t require strong personal branding. It was all about producing results in advance for clients and letting the results do all of the talking. Which works imo just as powerfully as strong personal branding.
I dare say in the beginning building your skillsets and producing results for people is more important than working on your personal branding.
Gary Vaynerchuk strongly advocates doing free work for people when just starting out.
The reason why Grant Cardone or Gary Vaynerchuk can produce so much free content that builds their personal branding is because they are actually a person of high value because they spent the first decade of being in business solely focused on building their own biz & skills.
Gary Vaynershuk takes pride in the fact that he built his dad’s wine business up to huge successes for a whole decade till he was late in his 30’s before he decided to begin talking about it.
I’m not saying you have to go out there build a business for 10 years before working on your personal branding but what I’m saying is you better have some actual tangible skills that can help other people before worrying about your personal brand.
Doing soul searching & deep introspection is great & all but this does not directly translate to you becoming more valuable to the marketplace.
Most people start a business out of passion.
Do what you love and the money will follow.
I like watching UFC, but that ain’t gonna make me money.
I believe this is a huge reason why so many people fail.
Instead of putting the focus & attention on your shit, more people need to look at the marketplace and ask how can I help other people? What kind of solutions do they need?
Focus on what other people need. Not always focusing on what you want & need.
Then go do those things that can make other people’s lives better or easier, and as you continue to do those things, you’re building your high-income skillsets that will allow you to gradually become a true expert like a Grant Cardone or Gary Vee.
I find that when you’re building a high-income skill, which is any skill that allows you to make at least $10K per month, then you will build a passion around it because bringing tons of value to other people is fun & rewarding.
Once you know how to make money with your skillsets, then building your personal branding makes a lot more sense & it can take you to that next level, allowing you to make more money for the same work.
Personal branding is important, but its not the primary.
Marisa Murgatroyd’s personal branding allows her to attract the best clients that pay top dollars but ultimately it is her skills of revamping other people’s businesses that gives her the confidence to command premium prices for her work.
I see this mistake all the time, Do NOT allow “personal branding” as another excuse as to why you aren’t prospecting more.
At first it is better to take massive imperfect actions with no personal branding than to spend months building a finely tuned personal branded website & you’re still not making any money from your business.
First you need to go develop your high-income skills.
Only one way to develop skills, & that’s through doing shit. Through repetition, ya dig?
One of the fastest shortcut to mastering a skill is to get a mentor.
We teach students the skill of lead generation, basically learning the skill of generating customers for small businesses using free traffic. When you have the skill of ranking sites & generating free traffic, then you will stand out from the crowd anyways without personal branding because you have superior skillsets.
Skills pay the bills.
This is the skill that allowed me to quit my 9 to 5 job and work from home making multiple 6 figures using nothing but my laptop & internet connection.
If you’re interested in what I believe is the best way to build your first 6 figure income online, then go here to check out our local lead generation coaching program.
I’m a huge fan of the UFC & maybe you’ll dig this analogy if you’re also a fight fan.
Conor McGregor is a prime example of a fighter that has capitalized big time for building his personal brand.
His 3 piece suits, tattoos, beard, his Irish accent, his shit talking skills all goes towards building his personal brand that eventually allowed him to get a $100 million fight with Floyd Mayweather.
But at the end of the day, he’s a guy that can talk the talk AND walk the walk, he has legit world class fighting skills that he built up through years of grinding in the gym. Ultimately its his skill of being able to knock out people dead with one punch, that gives him the allure & massive interests to get that big money fight with Floyd.
Yes all his personal branding stuff makes him a superstar, but if the skills ain’t there & he doesn’t actually win his fights, none of that extra shit matters.
Take for example, a fighter like Tony Ferguson.
I’m a huge fan of this fighter with 10 fight winning streak, just the gritty, hard working fighter born & raised in Michigan (which is where I’m from) that’s an absolute beast inside that octagon but definitely bit rough around the edges when it comes to his marketability & not as smooth on the mic like McGregor.
He’s an example of a fighter that lets his skills & performances do the talking. Doesn’t make the same amount of money as some of the stars in the UFC but in all fairness, he still makes more money than 90% of the fighters in the UFC because of his skills.
Develop your personal brand, but always keep your eye on building your own world-class skills at the forefront because that’s what really separates you from the noisy world.
