Amazing Selling Machine is an Amazon FBA course that teaches you how to build a physical products business on Amazon. Course was created by Matt Clark & Jason Katzenback.
I first heard about Amazon Selling Machine program in 2016 when I went to this online marketing conference in Orlando, FL… I had already built a multiple 6 figure local lead generation business at the time, but I believe in the value of continually investing in your education & developing new connects with other entrepreneurs.
I met a kid that had built a multiple 6 figure Amazon business from scratch selling kitchen glassware, and he told me he’s gone through few Amazon courses but in his opinion, the Amazing Selling Machine was one of his favorites.
So after a year later, in 2017 I decided to give this course a shot and build a new income stream of selling physical products.
Here’s my view of what this course teaches you and if the Amazon business is right for you or not.
But first, let me show you why many are hopping on the Amazon business train.
Case for Why Selling on Amazon is a Good Idea?
First Amazon is showing incredible increases in growth & sales volume over the recent years.
- 70% of Americans that earn $160K or more have Amazon Prime Accounts
- Amazon Net Sale hit $177.9 Billion in 2017, which is 31% increase from $136 billion in 2016.
- Even with these big numbers, Online e-commerce sales only account for 11% of total sales in the US, showing that majority of people are still buying things from brick & mortar stores (so 1 out of every 10 purchases were made online)
- In 2016 study was done to show Amazon sales were 40% of all online sales, & all metrics show this market share is growing rapidly
Not only are above numbers impressive as hell.
Amazon is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for an online e-commerce store such as:
Flying drone shipping
Local Store Pickup
Massive completely automated warehouses
Amazon’s own shipping company
The case for starting your business on Amazon is to leverage their success & rising popularity.
What will this course teach you & What you have to do to build a successful Amazon Business?
To build any successful business, when it comes to selling physical products requires focus, dedication & continued effort to maintain great customer service & product order fulfillment.
Here are some of the tasks you’ll be required to do with your Amazon business.
- Product research, researching competition
- Using places like Alibaba, sourcing your product, ordering samples from manufacturers and testing out the products
- negotiation and getting deals with suppliers
- logo design
- package design
- ordering in bulk, sending product to Amazon FBA center
- Product listing: creating bundles, keywords, setting the best price, optimizing product image, more
- Optimizing sales, using ppc camaigns to drive sales
- Dealing with negative reviews
- Dealing with prying eyes from competitors
- Watching for key metrics in your Amazon business
- Hiring virtual assistant
- Building your business further, building its own site, etc
- Selling the business
My general view of buildling a physical product business is that it does take time and you really need a great product selection/design and/or great supplier that can help you bring to the market something unique and special that’ll be popular for the long term.
When people are asked what’s the most challenging part of this business.
The poll clearly showed that most people get stuck at: product/niche selection
and for good reasons.
Most people are afraid to fail and they get stuck with paralysis by analysis
I had to order many different types of product samples before deciding which one to go with.
Even then there is no guarantee that it’ll become a success.
Then you need to spend a lot of time carefully promoting the product listing till it can climb up to a prominent position on the Amazon search results.
Having this course teaches you all the tips & tricks to doing all of these steps the best possible way so you can save you from making costly mistakes.
What causes Amazon product listing to get ranked higher?
Before 2016, the go-to method to boosting the rankings of your Amazon product listing as to fabricate fake reviews.
These days its much much harder to create fake reviews or incentivized reviews. And Amazon its cracking down even harder in 2018.
So a lot of the so-called Amazon FBA success stories of rapid sales within weeks of launching a product is not really applicable today.
Any tricks employed to hack your listing to the top, eventually gets taken down by Amazon’s algorithm that’s getting ever so stricter by the day.
Ultimately which product gets ranked high is its conversion rate.
Basically how many people land on your product listing & buy from you.
This is why its very important to first have great product concept or selection.
Then having amazing logo / packaging / design.
And very finely tuned product listing.
Another method is to run PPC paid advertising at initial launch to your product to force additional eye balls / buyers to your product listing.
With more Amazon FBA sellers in the game today than there just few years ago, the Amazon FBA business is getting more competition and to start getting sales does take much longer than now because you have to take a more genuine approach to launching a popular product & getting authentic reviews from real buyers.
Not being able to fabricate fake reviews was a big shift that made a lot of Amazon FBA courses that taught these tactics obsolete.
Luckily Amazing Selling Machine has continually updated their course year after year.
Summary of the Good & Bad of Amazon FBA business
So whats the difference between Amazon FBA business vs building your own shopify e-commerce business?
Which is better?
Here are top reasons to like the Amazon business model versus other online business one could start in 2018.
- Amazon is rising in popularity and all indicators show that this is a company that’s not going anywhere soon
- Amazon FBA cuts out the need for the business to worry about inventory, packaging & shipping. You let Amazon handle all of that for you.
- The opportunity to build a real brand that can be sold later for pretty big amount of money
- Places like alibaba makes it easy to find suppliers overseas
- still plenty of opportunities
- scalable business, besides product order cost, you have virtually no other overhead
- There’s no formula to guarantee success, Despite doing everything correct, some product simply will not work. (hint: must be not afraid to abandon projects)
- Due to recent algorithm changes, getting your product listing ranked takes much longer time
- You have less control than building your own shopify store. Such as profit margin, how you market & sell your product, etc
- Having to deal with negative reviews
- selling physical product has its nuances: Always having to make sure you have enough inventory, product complaints, breaking, returns
One thing I really like about the Amazon FBA business over selling your product on your own shopify store is that with the shopify business you have to continually rely on Facebook paid advertising for your traffic and sales.
With Amazon, if you pick a homerun product and you do everything else correct, you can potentially create a very popular brand that gets tons of great reviews and a great product listing that sticks at the top of the first page of the search results for your main keywords and you could begin getting organic sales on auto-pilot for years to come.
I love that organic traffic aspect of the Amazon FBA business.
And right now I would lean towards more on building an Amazon FBA business over sole focus on shopify & using FB ads.
Although there’s nothing wrong with doing both, if you find a great product.
Amazing Selling Machine is one of the original Amazon FBA courses and its one of the most popular one as they have done a great job at covering A through Z everything one needs to learn to build a successful FBA business.
They have continually updated the course to reflect continual changes that Amazon has rolled out over the years.
Many tips & tricks that have worked in the past such as fabricating fake reviews & such do not work anymore today.
Each time these changes take place, there’s a lot of FBA guys that get really worried but its simply nature of the business, because you’re completely relying on the platform that is Amazon.
Generally speaking, you’ll have less control
I have built a successful Amazon FBA business myself but it took some time. The first few product launches were utter failure, but the key was I never gave up.
After 1 year of trying, I had a physical product business on Amazon that was generating around $4,500 in net profit per month.
To be fair, I was in a different predicament from most ASM members though because I already had a six-figure online business doing SEO.
Hey if selling physical products sounds like a fun time for you, you won’t go wrong with investing in ASM.
For me I get annoyed with doing the same task over and over again so I focused more on my passion of helping local business owners because with SEO once you rank a site, you can forget about it and the site will continue to make money for you month after month.
But with selling a physical product, you always have to maintain a watchful eye over the entire business from your inventory, product order fulfillment, customer service to the health of your product listing.
I believe learning the skill of ranking a website and generating free organic traffic is much more versatile high-income skill to have on the internet.
The biggest complaint I have about the Amazon FBA business is that it can take such a long time before you can tell your product selection is going to be a success or not.
Having to scrap a project that you worked hard for over several month is a very much a bummer.
This can be a difficult pill to swallow for a complete newbie.
Once you reach a certain level you can have virtual assistants help you launch many different products at a time, minimizing your risks.
However, it shows that product selection is pretty darn difficult even for advanced Amazon FBA sellers.
Buyer behavior can be quite unpredictable.
That’s what makes Amazon FBA business moderately difficult online business to start.
But like all businesses, if it was easy everyone will be doing it.
At least by investing in courses like ASM, it increases your likelihood to succeed and as long as you follow the blueprint anyone can start this business even with no prior business experience.
After going through ASM and after several failed product launches finally getting successful with one of the products, I believe the easier online business to start if you’re simply looking to kill you job is the local lead generation business.
- more opportunities
- easier competition
- you have more control
- success rate of every single project is nearly 100% as long as you keep at it
- you can start multiple projects at once
- faster results
Nothing wrong with Amazon FBA business I just think generally speaking its bit harder to reach success than learning the skill of lead generation which can be applied to so many different opportunities online.
Lead gen was how I was first able to quite my job once and for all and how I was able to build my first 6 figure online business before I started experimenting with other businesses.
Lead gen is still the biggest money maker for me by far.
At the online business conference, I went to in 2018, I’d say lead generation using SEO and the Amazon FBA business was the top 2 online business that I saw people running successfully fulltime.
Like I said, after trying both businesses, I still lean more towards lead generation business because I like taking on variety of projects at once, I like sales & talking to real people & helping them out, I also feel its bit more scalable business.
If you’re the type that likes to have more singular focus on one project at a time, then Amazon FBA business might be more for you, you can’t go wrong with Amazing Selling Machine course by Matt & Jason.
